With the drama of government issued travel bans, airline fleet grounding to save costs and border restrictions as a result of COVID-19 or Coronavirus, many travellers and expats are currently stuck overseas, trying to get home.
As I mentioned in yesterdays podcast, Jade Talks Cheap Flights, My sister and her boyfriend called me yesterday in a panic from Bali saying, “we just went to check in for our flight and it’s been cancelled and we’ve received nothing from the airline or Webjet (Australian based online travel agent they booked through), what do we do?”
Luckily, she had a brother who was in the know and within an hour, they had bought another ticket home, for the same price, on an upgraded airline which now included extra baggage, meals and inflight entertainment, so they could enjoy the rest of their trip, knowing they would still be able to get home.
Which got me thinking, I’m yet to see any media segments or articles notifying travellers what flights are still operating, and how they should attempt to get home, if they are still planning to. So here’s what I found:
Your first visit should be the IATA Travel Centre, which is updated daily on which countries have what restrictions in place, so you can plan your trip home. According to the Dubai Airport website, you are still allowed to transit via Dubai which makes Emirates a good option for those in Europe or the Middle East as direct flights Dubai to Sydney are still operating.
My uncle just flew back from India, via Singapore and transiting is okay in some destinations, just as long as you don’t plan on leaving the airport. You’ll need to confirm for your individual circumstances.
Also every arrival into Australia will need to self-isolate for 14 days irrespective of the country you’ve just come from, or whether you’ve been in contact with someone infected with COVID-19.
All flights mentioned were available at the prices listed at the time of posting, however obviously, things are changing exponentially. Also note, some airlines are requiring passengers to have their own face masks, etc prior to boarding or face a possible denied boarding.
If you have a flight booked back to Australia in the next few days, that is still operating, you do not need to do anything, you can catch your flight as planned.
However, if your flight is cancelled, your best option is to book a new ticket online, so you know you have a flight back to Australia confirmed, then most airlines are giving options of a credit on cancelled flights (some airlines are giving you till the end of March for this, others till the end of May). Call centres are super busy, average wait time is 3-4 hours and they are only servicing passengers departing within 24 hours.
*Update: My sister finally received a notice from Jetstar saying her flight had been cancelled but they are unable to assist her further. In other words they flew her there, but have now just left her in Bali.

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin are still operating flights to get Australian’s back home, despite the media report saying all international flights are cancelled. Other airlines like Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, ANA, Garuda and Air New Zealand are still operating international flights to Australia, with a reduced schedule, or amended routing to pick up additional passengers.
