France has recently passed laws banning short-haul domestic flights for routes already covered by its vast railway network.

For rail journeys under 2.5 hours, you won’t find an alternative domestic flight option, even it was previously cheaper to fly.

The decision was made to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and short-haul domestic flights were deemed unnecessary plus a large contributor to carbon emissions, hence the ban on them.

Not all domestic flights in France will be banned, but considering airlines have suffered greatly because of COVID-19 border closures, they are vocally opposed to the ban.

What do you think? Should all countries ban short-haul domestic flights to reduce carbon emissions or is there a better alternative?
