Hello, kia ora, ni hao, buon giorno, namaste, zdras-tvuy-te and hallo!
Despite what you may see or read in the media, the bushfires are nearly all out and Australia is 100% open for tourism. We finally received our first decent rain today including thunder!
However, small towns desperately need your tourism dollars. Now that government warnings have been lifted, as a Blue Mountains resident (an area that was affected), the threat is over, the smoke is gone and because so many tourists stayed away, there’s hardly anyone around!
Get out of the big cities, take a road trip, stay in a motel, eat at the local pub, take a selfie at the Big Banana, the Big Pineapple, the Big Prawn, the Big Bogan, the Big Sheep, the Big Koala, the Big Gold Panner…Yes these are all real attractions and you can find the full list here.
Would your friends like this? ❣️ Share it with them.
Have a pie at any of the Best Pie Shops in the Blue Mountains, peruse secondhand bookshops, drink bush tea, stay in a tiny house in the bush or sample the best cheesecake in Australia, (declared by me) found in Nhill.
You can book any aspect of your Australia trip, here.
The following list is not definitive but are some small towns I’ve visited that I loved, whether it was a museum, a big thing, a gallery, eateries, nature, beaches, shops, or friendly locals.
Places worth visiting in NSW: Blue Mountains, Mudgee, Hunter Valley, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, Tamworth, Kiama, Bega, Cowra, Broken Hill, Bourke, Batemans Bay, Eden, Bowral.
Places worth visiting in Victoria: Bendigo, Ballarat, Wangaratta, Gippsland, Macedon, Grampians and of course, Nhill.
Places worth visiting in Queensland: Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay, Fassifern, Cairns/Great Barrier Reef, Gold Coast
Got a small town that’s worth seeing that suffered in the fires? Contact me and I’ll add it to the list.
You can catch trains and buses but renting a car means you can stop when you see something you like, so you’re more likely to encounter hidden gems.

Be sure to check out this page, for itinerary suggestions, or to book car hire, attraction passes, flights, hotels and more for your perfect Aussie getaway!
Why book via my website?
As an independent creative, it’s incredibly challenging to make a living from selling books or my services as a photographer alone, competing against giant corporate conglomerates. However, sharing my wealth of knowledge from years spent travelling, and working in the travel industry provides useful knowledge to you (at no cost) to help make independent travel, easier. The thing is though, it costs real money to keep this website going.
I know you have an array of websites to choose from when it comes to booking your travel arrangements, however Booking your flights, hotels, attractions, day tours, car hire, rail passes, buying guide books, SIM cards and any other travel products you encounter, via links provided on my website, (including this page) costs you nothing extra (in many cases they are discounted from what you could find elsewhere), but it helps keep my website going. Booking via links on my website takes a small commission from large corporations who then give it to me because you clicked on links via my website, thus supporting an independent creative at no cost to you.
As an ex-travel agent, I’m fully aware of what potential online scams are out there, and will only include links I use myself (or plan to).
Feel free to visit my shop, or this page for other ways to support this site. If you have any questions, or suggestions, please feel free to contact me, or read my privacy policy.
I’m just one guy, trying to make a difference in the world and for your support, I thank you 🙂
In the meantime, you can donate directly to the RFS here. Your donations help provide much needed equipment, meals, and machinery required to help keep these fires at bay.
Thanks for reading!
Happy travels
cheers,
